| The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Lily, an abused white teen is living on a farm with her widowed father. She runs away with her black housekeeper to a place where she thinks her mother might have lived. It is the home of the three black sisters who take them in and give them work. Although there are many dark incidents in the story, the day-to-day life of the women is so supportive, spiritual and wholesome that it is a pleasure to read.

| Single and Single by John Le Carre
Single and Single are a father and son living in London at the time of Gorbachev in the Soviet Union. The father has a fabulously successful business. He is waiting for his son to finish law school and join the firm. The son, a naïve fellow, doesn't have a clue about the skullduggery that goes on in the background. The story depicts the U.S.S.R. before the wall came down.
