The mission of the San Luis Obispo County Library is to provide materials and services to people seeking knowledge, lifelong learning, and recreation, as well as to ensure that all patrons of the library may use those materials and services to the maximum extent possible. In fulfilling this mission, the Library provides free public access to the information resources of the Internet. Because the Internet is a vast, unregulated medium, the Library cannot control and is not responsible for the content or accuracy of information accessed over the Internet.
When accessing the Internet, library users must comply with all Federal, State and local laws. The Library uses filtering software to block access to some Internet sites. However, since no filtering software is completely effective the monitoring of a child's use of the Internet, like other library materials and services, is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian. Filters may falsely block material that is appropriate in a public library setting or they may fail to block access to illegal or objectionable material. Library users may request library staff block or unblock a specific site. The San Luis Obispo County Library will respond to questions and concerns regarding the filter's accuracy by communicating with the filtering software vendor towards improving its product. Users agree not to display or download any sexually explicit or obscene graphic material.
The San Luis Obispo County Library provides access to the Internet at dedicated computers or using the wireless network at designated branches. Public Internet access conditions of use vary, including time limits within each branch library.
The Library's wireless network is not secured and information passing through the network could be monitored, captured, or altered by others. It is your responsibility to protect your information from all risks associated with using the wireless network, including damage, loss, or theft that may occur as a result of your use of the Library's wireless access.
Due to limited bandwidth, the type and scope of wireless internet use may be limited.
Library staff cannot provide detailed instruction about computer workstation software or the Internet. Volunteer Docents are available at some locations to assist in learning basic computer skills and how to "navigate" the Web. Users should inquire at local branch libraries for specific information about these services. The San Luis Obispo City-County Library fully endorses the principles documented in the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement of the American Library Association.
By using a San Luis Obispo County Library public Internet computer or by using the wireless network and your own device at a San Luis Obispo County Library, you indicate that you understand and agree to abide by this policy, as well as the San Luis Obispo County Library Rules of Conduct.
