Following the recommendation of the County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department to maintain aggressive social distancing, all County of SLO Public Libraries are closed until further notice. Please click here for full details.

Most library staff are currently working as Disaster Service Workers providing vital support for the community. The library is currently exploring ways to restore services to the public and will do so as soon as we are able. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.

Brief History

The San Luis Obispo County Library was established in 1919 under authority of the County Free Library Act. The Library is a department of the County of San Luis Obispo, operating under the authority of the County Board of Supervisors. Today the library provides service to residents of 6 of the 7 incorporated cities and the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County, a service area that extends over 3,000 square miles. The Library offers circulation of books, magazines, newspapers, government publications, and other special publications, and also offers downloadable media of all types.
