Exam Proctoring at County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries
Does the library offer examination proctoring services?
Proctoring services are available by scheduled appointment only at the San Luis Obispo Library and the Atascadero Library of the County of San Luis Obispo Library system.
- All exams will be proctored by a Librarian.
- Fill out the questionnaire or call one of the Libraries listed below.
- Allow a minimum of 10 business days, for library staff to schedule an exam and contact you. We reserve the right to decline an appointment, if the process exceeds library and/or staff capabilities, timeline, or County IT concerns.
What types of exams does the library proctor?
Print and/or online exams.
- If your laptop is not permitted to be used on the exam, the library has Chromebooks or public computer stations, if permitted by the school.
- Students are responsible for testing the device they will be using in advance of the exam date to determine if the County network may block or interfere with the exam site.
- It is highly recommended that online exams be scheduled well in advance of the deadline in case of unforeseen downtime.
Where will the exams be held?
Exams will be proctored on the first floor of the San Luis Obispo or Atascadero Library, in a study room with a glass wall. Contact information for both libraries is found below.
- Your laptop or a library Chromebook can be used in this study room.
- If a library computer is needed, they are only located in public areas.
- Library staff cannot guarantee absolute silence, privacy, or constant supervision.
How much does this service cost?
The fee is $30 per exam and is paid on the exam date, prior to beginning the exam. Fee is payable in cash, check (written to County of San Luis Obispo Library), or money order.
- This fee covers photocopying; however, any postage or envelopes for return mail, FedEx, or UPS charges must be covered by the student or the school, in advance and in addition to the $30 fee.
How do I schedule an exam?
Fill out the questionnaire or call one of the Libraries listed below. Please allow a minimum of 10 business days, for proctors to schedule an exam.
- It is the responsibility of the student to schedule an appointment, arrange for all test materials to be sent to the library location, and call the library to confirm receipt of the exam.
- All deadlines, including mailing, are the responsibility of the student, who should consider delays in mailing, availability of the proctor, or days which the library is closed.
- If the student is late, cancels the appointment, or fails to appear for the exam, it is up to them to reschedule.
The library is not responsible for unforeseen events such as network or equipment failure, lost or delayed mail, or library closure. In the event of absence or illness of the proctor, the library will attempt to reschedule the exam to a later date or to assign an alternate proctor contingent upon the school's consent.
How will the test be proctored?
The proctor will verify a student’s identity by checking a valid photo ID and ensure the academic guidelines are followed during the exam.
- We want the student to feel comfortable while taking their exam and will do our best to provide unobstructed, non-disruptive monitoring.
- The student must adhere to all library standards of behavior when taking the exam. Rules of Conduct
- You must not use headphones, ear buds, or any other type of listening equipment.
- You must not communicate with any other person by any means.
- You must not use a phone for any reason.
- You must not leave the room during the exam for any reason unless the school instructions or rules for the exam specifically permit you to do so.
After I've confirmed my appointment, if I need to mail my exam in advance, where should I mail it to?
If your exam appointment has been confirmed and you need to mail in your exam in advance, please mail it to the branch where the exam will be proctored. The mailing addresses for these branches can be found here:
